This article is about the community. For the desktop environment, see KDE Plasma.

KDE is an international free software community that develops free and open-source software. As a central development hub, it provides tools and resources that allow collaborative work on this kind of software. Well-known products include the Plasma Desktop (the default desktop environment on many Linux distributions), Frameworks and a range of cross-platform applications like Krita or digiKam designed to run on Unix and Unix-like desktops, Microsoft Windows, and Android.

Mascots

The KDE community's major mascot is a green dragon named Konqi.

Besides, the KDE community presents another mascot named Katie in 2010 for the KDE women's community.

Current version designed by Tyson Tan

Konqi's current appearance is a redesigned work coming with the release of Plasma 5, with Tyson Tan's entry winning the redesign competition on the KDE Forums. Katie's appearance was also redesigned by Tyson Tan.
